Frequently Asked Questions

  • What type of addresses and ranges are you allocating?
    • Currently, IPv4 style addresses in the 1.x.x.x range.

  • Isn't this going to cause problems with the "Internet" ?
    • No, this is the Wireless Internet, a different physical medium to the Wired Internet.

  • Why not use the 10.x.x.x network?
    • Several protocols used already utilise the 10.x.x.x network for unregistered addresses during handshaking. Another class A network was required.

  • Are the addresses routable?
    • Yes, within the Wireless Internet, but not directly from the traditional wired internet.

  • Could the addresses become fully routable?
    • Yes, should the traditional Internet registries allocate the same range to Wiana, or to subnet Wiana's allocations within an IPv6 range.

  • Why not use the existing registries?
    • Applications for wireless address space were refused and the structure of these registries does not facilitate addresses for end users. Even with IPv6, allocations are described as "limited".

  • Wont you run out of space as quickly?
    • No, Wiana address space is allocated on an individual address basis. No subnets exist on the wireless internet. Routing is entirely peer to peer.

  • What are the fees?
    • There are currently no fees in relation to address allocations. A small fee may exist in the future, but this fee must not reduce the accesibility of gaining address space to end users.

  • How does per address authentication work?
    • All nodes utilising the Wiana cryptographic protocols exchange signed keys with neighbour nodes. Nodes will only route signed traffic.

  • Do I need to register for address space?
    • If you are running a wireless node utilising Wiana approved protocols, you will want to apply for an address to avoid using the default public address ranges and to secure your node.

  • How do I get the software?
    • Compatible wireless node hardware and software can be found at www.LocustWorld.com - please contact us with other compatible systems or if you would like to use the Wiana registry for another protocol.

  • How is Wiana funded?
